So my boss is having my ass for my prototype being slow on Frameless (and the share link is slow too) - is there any way to make this faster? I deleted all unnecessary assets in the folder but it's still laggy. It's only super fast on Framer Studio :(

It's hard to say what you might be doing to hurt performance. What are you testing the prototype on specifically?

Stephen Crowley

So when you say Frameless you mean using the Mirror feature and pulling it up on Frameless?

Noah Levin

Is it that it's slow to load or slow to perform after it's all loaded?

Katie Wu

Yes the mirror feature. I'm testing swiping interactions on a structure that involve a lot of page components and edge cases

Katie Wu

It's both - but mostly slow to perform

Jordan Robert Dobson

Whats the overall size of your Framer folder? Or even your images folder?

Jordan Robert Dobson

Also... what devices?

Katie Wu

400 MB but the folders inside don't add up to that. The images folder is the largest and it's 100mb. Everything else is mere kbs so I don't know where this extra memory is going

Katie Wu

I had to do it in iPhone 6+ because my boss has a 6+

Jordan Robert Dobson

Still!!! 100mb. That's your issue. You can't even upload more than 10mb to a share URL.

Jordan Robert Dobson

I assume you are importing from Sketch? Sounds like you need to simplify your groups and layers a bit.

Katie Wu

I can't simplify the groups structure but I could try getting rid of the images

Jordan Robert Dobson

Yeah I would pull out what you don't need... I believe every group creates a new set of images. Stephen Crowley can probably help there a bit more.

Try to convert images and static layers to Bitmaps? Compress compress compress

Kjelle Vergauwe

Compress with ImageOptim. Works like a charm. Also testing if png vs jpg is better for some images.

Stephen Crowley

Correct Jordan! I'm excited for the feature where putting an * after the parent group name flattens the image so even children become a single image to the parent. That saved me on reducing the file size. Can't wait for it to come back.

If you don't want to retool your prototype, you could always build a native app in Xcode with a UIWebView pointing to a locally embedded version of the prototype. You'll have to deal with all the standard iOS dev deployment fun to get it on his device though. We've done this when user testing larger end-to-end prototypes and it's worked well.

Katie Wu

...haha that involves learning iOS dev, which I am all for, but I'm not sure time constraints will allow. Also Jordan Robert Dobson do you mean pulling all the non-interactive things out of groups so Framer doesn't try to create images out of them?

Katie Wu

My boss just told me "if it doesn't work we're moving to Quartz Composer" :(

Jordan Robert Dobson

Yea Katie. Yeah make it as flat as you can. No point in having 100s of layers created.

Jordan Robert Dobson

Also, tell your boss to chill there's a solution for this.

Jordan Robert Dobson

How many interactive elements are we talking?

Katie Wu

Like...full app, so maybe like ~50ish. Yea he needs to simmer down

Jordan Robert Dobson

How layers do you get after an import?

I've been finding Frameless fairly unreliable in loading page correctly after switching WiFi network. This morning I couldn't get my prototype to load at all. Possibly worth a little attention IMO.

Katie Wu

Jordan Robert Dobson, just counted, and it was about 100

Jordan Robert Dobson

Katie Wu - I can help out… any way you want to send me the project privately?
