Now I'm working on the Framer app for Sketch I can do a quick UI update too. On one hand I think it would be better as a menu item, but on the other hand I feel like every other app today is a menu item. What do you guys think?

Thomas Miller made a mock of how it could look as a menu item:

as long as you can access it from a keyboard short cut :)

I think this works great. It would be cool if the icon highlights if the file has changed. Koen Bok I use bartender to manage that stuff.

I actually quite like the current native UI version. Not a big fan of menubar apps here)

As Andreas Wahlström said, a keyboard shortcut would be great.

What about my Photoshop Panel version? I'm working on getting it open sourced. Does Sketch support custom plugin panels or menu items?

Koen Bok

There is an in-app keyboard shortcut currently: cmd-r

Andreas Wahlström

I keep forgetting to export, so it would be nice if I could activate the shortcut from my code editor without having to switch back to Sketch.

Fredrik Ampler

running the export from the script menu (in Sketch) seems fine to me. Or maybe this menu thing will do something more than just exporting?

Thomas Aylott

With my Photoshop panel, you only need to export once. Every time you refresh the browser it pulls the latest changes from Photoshop at that time. I'm not sure if something similar is possible with Sketch.

Koen Bok

Thomas: I don't think so, but I'll ask Pieter.

Thomas Aylott

AFAIK Sketch is scripted by JSTalk. It should be possible for Node.js (or Objective-C or whatever) to call into that at any time.

Aaron Carámbula

Tabbing to the app and hitting cmd r is fine, i don't know if another menu bar item will improve anything, it will likely slow me down.

To that end the in-app panel is the best model, or for sketch maybe another always in the background thing.

Aaron Carámbula

Just sayin, if I have to move my mouse I'll be sad sauce. From a ux perspective I feel like menu bar items should be relevant anywhere in the system and at any time. Framer is useful only from the design app and only when building prototypes.

Koen Bok

I can easily add a global hot key. Sounds like that would be handy for a few folks.

Aaron Carámbula

Hope it doesn't conflict with anything. Or is configurable. How about progress? Handled from the icon or do I have to have the popover open?

Koen Bok

Configurable. Maybe some animation in the icon...

Aaron Carámbula

sweet, if it's gotta be a menu bar item, global key command will bring an improvement. thanks for maintaining the app!

Craig Murray

Cool idea. But I don't believe the menu bar execution really adds much value to me. I want export within the context of my design application (Photoshop). That's just my oppinion though.

Ideally, I see a killer opportunity to develop something (configurable for your design tool of choice) akin to a toggler. One that jumps back and forth between PS/Sketch and the Framer editor. This provides me with graphics manipulationa nd realtime preview of code teaks AS I FIDDLE.

Aaron Carámbula

I'd also request a way to specify a js file to include/copy into the project. I have some stuff I always use and hate cluttering my app.js :D

Aaron Carámbula

also i sometimes like jquery or another framework and now that I'm into codepen I am spoiled…

Maykel Loomans

Enabling the external inclusion of a js file would be a small thing that I think could go a long way for some kind of framer tools ecosystem where we can share stuff and get some non built-in standardised patterns going.
