I was under the impression that Sketch Mirror is also just running a web server, since it gives you a local URL like Framer Studio does. But Sketch Mirror works over USB even when my phone and laptop are not on the same network.

Any chance Framer would be able to replicate that magic? On some corporate WiFis it's often a pain to get Framer on iOS to connect, and prototypes can take forever to load if it does. Sucks a lot of time out of my day, especially when I'm testing it on 3-4 different devices in parallel.

How are you compensating? Are you running in the browser and testing in responsive web view?

I've had success viewing my prototypes via USB when I have Personal Hotspot enabled. Obviously, not a one-size-fits-all solution, but if you have that feature enabled on your device, a network connection via USB is possible.

I found a workaround. Install the app Frameless on iOS. If you start it it will detect the USB connection to framer studio. When you have connected, launch the official framer app. It will use now USB too. Works for me.
