Seems like I can't set Screen.backgroundColor to a Color since yesterday's update (just a hex string works fine). Is this a known bug?
Nice catch! If you choose Update Library from the File menu it should be working again.

That won't work. But you can do the following:Framer.Device.screen.gradient = new Gradient
Excellent! My thinking was that Screen was a shortcut for Framer.Device.screen. So I tried Screen.gradient = new Gradient. Thanks for the solution.
Only certain properties are surfaced on the Screen object so people won't break it too easily.
